Entering into foreign driver’s license reciprocity agreements (DLRAs) is a nuanced, intricate and time-consuming process that often requires collaboration between jurisdictions. In order to continue helping jurisdictions navigate this terrain and successfully enter into DLRAs, AAMVA created a working group that collaborated on a new, updated version of the 2009 Foreign Reciprocity Resource Guide.

Clearing a Safe Path

Traffic Incident Management (TIM) focuses on detecting, responding to, and clearing traffic incidents so that traffic flow can be restored as safely and quickly as possible. Effective TIM reduces the duration and impacts of traffic incidents and improves the safety of motorists, crash victims and emergency responders. Partners include law enforcement, emergency medical services, and fire and rescue.

BEST PRACTICES

After three years of hard work, AAMVA’s Vehicle Standing Committee released its Salvage and Junk Vehicle Best Practice guide in December 2019. By adopting the guide—which was developed to address inconsistencies in how salvage and junk vehicles are branded across jurisdictions—motor vehicle agencies can do their part to help make sure unsafe vehicles stay off the roads.

THE FIVE LEVELS OF DRIVING AUTOMATION

1

Driver Assistance

The first level of automation includes adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. These systems still require the driver to be in control.

2

Partial Automation

Level 2 automation assists in controlling speed and steering. Sensors monitor the distance between the vehicle and traffic ahead, while also providing steering assist by centering the vehicle within the lane.

3

Conditional Automation

Level 3 autonomous vehicles are capable of driving themselves, but only under ideal conditions and with limitations, such as limited-access divided highways at a certain speed. Although hands are off the wheel, drivers are still required behind the wheel.

4

High Automation

Level 4 autonomous vehicles can drive themselves in most environments and road conditions without human interactions but will be restricted to known use cases.

5

Full Automation

Level 5 autonomous vehicles should be able to monitor and maneuver through all road conditions and require no human interventions whatsoever, eliminating the need for a steering wheel and pedals.
