Behind the Badge: On Patrol with Sgt. Matt Sudduth
AAMVA joined the Kentucky State Police for a behind-the-scenes look at how troopers patrol the highways and keep roads safe in this web exclusive.
For Kentucky State Police Sgt. Matt Sudduth, every traffic stop begins with the same priority: safety.
As the Public Affairs Branch Commander for the Kentucky State Police, Sudduth serves as both an agency spokesperson and an active trooper who understands the realities officers face on the road every day. In this MOVE Magazine web exclusive, viewers ride along with Sgt. Sudduth as he provides a closer look at the people and responsibilities behind the badge and discusses the evolving challenges troopers encounter during traffic stops.
Throughout the ride-along, Sgt. Sudduth discusses some of the biggest challenges modern law enforcement faces during roadside interactions, including the language barriers that can exist between troopers and drivers, creating communication difficulties during already stressful situations. To help make some of these roadside interactions safer for officers and road users, AAMVA has developed a “What to Do and Expect When Pulled Over by Law Enforcement” video and written guide, available in both English and Spanish, that jurisdictions can share with their constituents.
Sgt. Sudduth conducts a traffic stop during the ride-along that involves a vehicle traveling above the speed limit. The driver and passengers are military members attempting to return home to Virginia. The interaction remains calm, respectful and professional, demonstrating the communication, situational awareness and safety that troopers strive to maintain during every roadside encounter. Beyond enforcement, the stop highlights the human side of policing and the importance of building trust with the public. Sgt. Sudduth’s approach reflects the broader mission shared by law enforcement and motor vehicle agencies nationwide, one focused on creating safer roadways while treating drivers with professionalism and respect.
A special thank you to Sgt. Matt Sudduth and the Kentucky State Police for participating in this MOVE Magazine web exclusive and providing insight into the realities of modern traffic enforcement and roadway safety.
